ECU partners with Moncrieff to position for growth
For the past eight years, Moncrieff has provided ECU with support in hardware decisions and purchases. Here is a link to a new case study which outlines how ECU has been positioning its ICT infrastucture to support its rapid growth.
Peter Austin, Infrastructure Architect at ECU tells how the university has kept pace by: - Over-achieving its 80% server virtualisation target in the past year, greatly reducing server numbers while increasing processor power. - Now spending more on storage than servers - to keep up with massive increases in demand.

Lenovo stops shipments due to Intel chipset flaw
(From IDG News Service)
Lenovo will stop shipments of its latest IdeaPad laptops and IdeaCentre desktops in the wake of Intel's revelation of a flaw in the Sandy Bridge chipset design.
The PC maker is also offering refunds or the option to replace motherboards at no cost for customers who have already bought PCs that contain Intel's latest Core i5 and i7 processors with the faulty chipsets.
Intel stopped shipments of their chipset code names Cougar Point after it said a design flaw could degrade the chipset over time and affect performance and functionality of storage devices such as hard drives.
"We have shipped a limited number of units with the affected Intel chip worldwide," Lenovo wrote in a statement, adding that the company had stopped shipping all products with an Intel 6 Series chipset.
The affected models include Lenovo's IdeaPad Y460P, Y560P, Z570, G470, G570, V370, V470, V570, B470 and B570 laptops and IdeaCentre K330, K330A and B520 desktops.
The company will replace motherboards as soon as the new parts become available. The company is also working with "customers to find an alternative remedy, including a full refund at point-of-sale."
Intel said it has fixed the design flaw and would start shipping the new chipset in small volumes to PC makers starting by the end of February.
Lenovo said that customers could continue to use Idea PCs with Intel 6-series chipsets, saying that Intel board failure rates are estimated to be less than five per cent over three years, "well within industry averages."
The offer to replace the system board is a precaution, the company said. "Low failure rate does not equal no failure rate, and that is why we are recommending that customers take advantage of the free system board replacement program now as a preventative measure against any future system failure," said Raymond Gorman, a Lenovo spokesman, in an e-mail.
Intel said it has not received complaints from customers so far, but that users with the chipset flaw could see data transfer rates to storage devices degrade, which could affect overall system performance.

Six smart ways to cut IT costs
It's the end of the year and Christmas is approaching; time for us to give you some tips on saving on IT costs without taking risks that could harm your systems.
Here are six general tips to cut IT costs:
• Ensure your datacentre (this includes anything from one to a thousand servers) is energy efficient. You will save money on your power bill whilst also doing your bit for the environment. Not sure how much power your datacentre consumes? Our free preliminary assessment will sort this out for you. • Simplify patch management and create efficient, repeatable processes. • Unify IT systems and endpoint security management through a single console, such as McAfee's ePO. • Ensure your network security is up to date to avoid systems crashing and losing productivity, not to mention having to spend time and money resolving the problem. • Recover your obsolete computer equipment; save space and get provided with a credit to purchase the latest technology with more power saving options. • Monitor your servers and desktops and update software, renew tape drives and protect your network before it becomes a problem. A bit of preventative maintenance can go a long way.
Moncrieff's solutions can assist you with implement these strategies in a cost-effective way, ensuring you receive the benefits.

Launch of new service
At Moncrieff, we like the environment. Just because we're dealing with products that are consuming large amounts of energy and consist of hazardous components, doesn't mean we don't care. We can't just dump obsolete equipment into landfill, nor is it feasable to keep storing old machines. So, to help out the environment, we have developed a new service called asset recovery; a pickup service to get rid of your old computer equipment in an environmentally friendly way. The costs are low and you may even be provided with a credit if your equipment can be recycled! We pick up any number of computers, starting from five units. Want to know more? Click here!

Making life a little easier at Kardinya Junior Football Club
At WJ Moncrieff, we like to get involved in helping a worthy cause. Such as the KJFC, a football club for the kids of Kardinya and surrounding suburbs. The club provides a safe and respectful environment for the kids to develop their football skills and foster personal development in the areas of sportsmanship, leadership and team work.
The club relies on its volunteers for the training and coaching of the kids, as well as the financial management of the club. As it was a nuisance for the volunteers to pass on club documents from one PC to another, the club was looking to get a notebook to unify its management. To make the volunteers' lives a little easier, WJ Moncrieff decided to present the club with a notebook free of charge. The $700 that would have been spent on a laptop, will now go to purchasing footy equipment.
We, at WJ Moncrieff, are proud to be able to help the KJFC through the donation of a Lenovo laptop and supporting the club in the service that it provides to the Kardinya community.
